Why Choose Long-Term Car Hire in Tenerife?
Whether you are staying for several weeks, spending winter in the sunshine, working remotely, visiting family or enjoying an extended break, having your own car makes everyday life much easier.
A long-term hire car gives you freedom for weekly shopping, visiting different towns, discovering quieter beaches, exploring the north and south, and travelling without depending on taxis or timetables.
Tenerife may look small on a map, but every area feels different. One day you can enjoy the warm south coast, another day you can explore green forests, mountain villages or traditional towns.
With your own car, Tenerife stops being just a holiday destination — it starts feeling like home.
Built for longer stays
A month of winter sun, a long sabbatical, or simply a holiday that deserves proper freedom — long-term hire gives you a car for as long as you need it, at a better daily rate, without the cost or hassle of buying and selling one yourself.
Long-Term Rental vs. Short Holiday Rental
Short Holiday Rental
- Usually 7–14 days
- Airport → hotel → attractions
- Fast sightseeing
- Main tourist areas
Long-Term Car Hire
- More flexibility
- Explore slowly
- Visit everyday places
- Live more like a local
- Discover hidden Tenerife
A longer stay gives you something most visitors never get — time. Your car lets you use it.

How to Get the Best Value from Long-Term Car Hire
- When hiring a car for several weeks, the cheapest daily price is not always the most important factor.
- Choose a car comfortable enough for regular use, not just the cheapest one on the screen.
- Think about luggage and passengers for the length of your stay.
- Consider fuel economy over weeks or months of driving.
- Smaller cars make parking easier in older towns.
- Book early during the winter months, when demand for long-term hire is highest.
For a longer stay, your car becomes part of everyday life — not just transport from the airport. Choose something you'll enjoy using every day.
Tenerife Experiences for Longer Stays
Week 1 — Discover Your Area
Spend your first days enjoying where you're staying. Explore nearby beaches, supermarkets, restaurants, coastal walks and local towns before venturing further afield.
Week 2 — Discover Another Side of Tenerife
Recommended: Mount Teide, La Orotava, Garachico, Anaga and the traditional villages. This is when many visitors realise Tenerife is much more than sunshine.
Week 3+ — Live Like a Local
Try local markets, smaller restaurants, quiet viewpoints, villages away from the resorts and different walking areas. The places you remember are often the ones you find without planning.
Local Advice: Don't Stay in One Tenerife
Most visitors see only one version of Tenerife. The south means sunshine, beaches and resorts. The north means history, forests and local towns. The mountains mean volcano landscapes, viewpoints and nature. A longer stay gives you the chance to experience all of them. The island is small enough to explore, but varied enough that every drive feels different.
Before Choosing a Long-Term Hire Car in Tenerife
- Do not automatically choose the smallest car — for several weeks, comfort matters.
- Check your accommodation parking situation before you arrive.
- Think about how you'll actually use the car: local shopping, mountain drives, or family trips?
- If staying in older towns like Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna, a smaller car can make parking easier.
- For longer stays, reliability and support matter more than saving a very small amount.
- Book early if visiting during popular winter months, when many Europeans come for long stays.

For a short holiday you might get away without one, but for a longer stay a car changes everyday life - weekly shopping, visiting different towns, discovering quieter beaches, and getting around without depending on taxis or timetables.
It depends on how you'll use it. Small cars suit couples who mainly stay around one area and want easy town parking. Compact or family cars suit longer journeys, luggage and regular exploring. Larger cars suit family visits, groups, or an extended stay with more luggage.
Generally yes - the main motorways connect the island quickly, though mountain roads towards Teide, Masca or Anaga are narrower and slower than the kilometres suggest. Over a longer stay you get time to become comfortable with all of it.
Most long-stay visitors start by exploring their immediate area in the first week, then branch out to Mount Teide, La Orotava, Garachico and Anaga in the second, before settling into local markets, smaller restaurants and quieter villages once they're properly comfortable with the island.
It varies by town. In older centres such as Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna, a smaller car makes parking noticeably easier. Elsewhere, resort and coastal parking is generally straightforward.
In most cases, yes - just get in touch before your rental ends and we'll do our best to extend it, subject to the car being available for the extra time.
